Stay cool with these member service tips

Summer is in full swing, and with that comes hot weather. We all like to stay cool inside, but that can lead to high energy bills. Remember, the greater the difference between the inside air and the outside air, the harder your cooling system needs to work to maintain the same thermostat setting.

Did you know that there are some things you can do to help limit high electric bills? Here are a few suggestions from our member service team.

Check the usage data on the South Central app / My Account. This tool puts you in control, as it enables you to view daily and hourly meter data, which can potentially help you understand when you are using the most electricity. With the usage data, and talking with an energy advisor, we just may be able to pinpoint the appliance/device that is using more energy than it should.

Visit the energy saving resources on our website, and try out the Energy Calculator and/or the Building a Home feature. If you like to use online tools, these can help you understand the meter data and break down your individual home electricity cost.

Don’t forget simple changes like closing the drapes or skylights during direct sunlight, and making sure your windows have proper caulking. Fans cool people, not rooms, so only have the fan on while you’re actually there, and make sure it is set for the season (clockwise in the winter, counterclockwise in the summer).

Need assistance?

We know some members occasionally need financial assistance, and we do allow for payment arrangements. In addition, there are many agencies that will assist, including Community Action and the Department of Job and Family Services (for those who qualify), HEAP, Salvation Army, Veterans Administration, churches, and other local organizations. Also, you can dial 211 to find about other assistance that may be available to you, depending on the county you are in.

If you have questions, you are always welcome to give us a call at 800-282-5064. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
