Winter Reminders

Tips to keep you safe and warm all winter long

Space heaters

Space heaters can be the perfect solution to take the winter chill out of the air. However, they are only meant for small spaces. Many people use portable space heaters to heat their entire homes, which can really take a toll on their energy bills.

If you’re using a space heater to compensate for problems in your home, like inadequate insulation, drafty windows and exterior doors, or an inefficient heating system, space  heaters are not a practical solution. You’re better off tackling those problems at the root cause and only using space heaters in small spaces.

Additionally, ensure space heaters are at least three feet away from all objects that could burn.

Generators

Even though South Central Power works hard all year to make our grid as reliable as possible, outages sometimes occur due to weather, animal interference, or other factors outside of our control. Generators can be a great asset during these times, but they must be used with caution due to health and safety concerns. Keep these things in the front of your mind while using a generator:

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning — Carbon monoxide is emitted from the exhaust of generators. Never operate a generator inside or in a partially enclosed space.
  • Electrocution — Have a qualified electrician install an appropriate power transfer switch.
  • Fire — Before refueling, turn off the generator and allow it to cool.

Be prepared

Sometimes outages happen, but having a plan and having the right items on hand can lessen the impact. We recommend the following items for a disaster kit in the event of an  outage:

  • First-aid kit, including prescriptions
  • Nonperishable food
  • Water: One gallon per day for each member of your household
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Sleeping bags/warm blankets
  • Fully charged cellphone and car or solar charger
