Expanded Rate Classes Effective April 1, 2024

South Central Power Company has expanded our commercial account rate classes from two classes to four classes, with three primary goals in mind:

  • Incorporate the results from our most recent cost of service study.
  • Present your billing information in an easier to understand format.
  • Provide for many members a better way to control your bill through energy efficiency improvements.

With these changes, commercial accounts will be assigned to a new rate class, effective April 1, 2024. In addition to the rate reclassifications, there is a rate increase effective April 1.

Why are rates changing?

  • Around the world, the cost of generating and delivering power continues to rise. At South Central Power, every effort is made to keep rates low, and we’ve managed to keep rate increases far below the rate of inflation and lower than many other Ohio electric utilities as well.
  • South Central Power periodically works with a third-party rate consulting firm to conduct an impartial and comprehensive cost of service study. South Central staff and elected trustees use those study results to design and formulate rates that allow us to recover costs more fairly and equitably, while operating as a not-for-profit electric cooperative.
  • Our new rate structure allows us to collect more fixed costs through fixed charges and is an equitable approach to billing that factors in costs beyond just kilowatt hour sales.
  • As a cooperative, any excess revenue collected through this bill adjustment, like always, will be allocated to you as a member, based on sales for the year.
  • As a commercial account member at South Central Power, we have resources available to help you analyze your bill and identify opportunities to save energy and lower costs.
  • For a bill comparison analysis and/or to determine in more detail how this directly impacts your account(s), please call our Energy Services team at (740) 689-6125 to speak to someone directly.
